Pet Snake Care on Feeding

Feeding a snake can be overwhelming for new pet owners. Here is a basic guideline on what, when, and how to feed your pet snake.

Pet Snake Care on What to Feed Your Snake

Snakes have carnivorous taste. So they can survive from eating mammals, birds, fish, insects, amphibians, and other reptiles. Common foods for pet snakes include mice or rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and chicken. Young or new born snakes should be only fed with small animals like mice pinkies. As they grow old, you can adjust the food choices.

From one day old pinkies to fuzzies then to hoppers, assess how much your snake can handle. You can also feed your snakes with a live prey or pre-killed prey. Pre-killed preys are more ideal since it can’t harm your pet snake.

The feeding schedule should have a 7 to 10 day intervals. However, young snakes can be fed instantly once it excretes or defecates. This usually happens after 3 to 5 days after feeding. Snakes should be only sold when it had 1 to 2 normal meals. This is one of the first things you need to ask a breeder when you are choosing for a young snake as your pet.

If you have more than one pet snake, make sure that you feed them separately to avoid competition against each other. In feeding your snake, use a long tongs or forceps to avoid hurting yourself. The snake might think that your hand is part of its meal.

Some snakes will just eat the food once placed inside its cage. However, if this is not the case, you can wiggle down the food to catch the attention of your snake. Offer the food head first and let the snake strike it from the tongs.
